Scientific Research on Car Color and Crash Risk
Car color has been the subject of many scientific studies. However, these studies have reached conflicting conclusions.
One study from researchers at the University of Auckland in New Zealand reviewed about 14 months of crash records. Using statistical analysis to control for external factors like light and weather conditions, the researchers concluded that silver cars are 50% less likely to be involved in crashes resulting in serious injuries than black, brown, and green cars.
Building on this study, researchers at Monash University in Australia looked at a significantly larger sample size of over 850,000 records. Again, the scientists controlled for factors like lighting, weather, and alcohol use.
This study’s conclusions directly contradicted the prior research. It reported that red and silver cars had a statistically significant increase in crash risk. In other words, red and silver cars are more likely to crash regardless of lighting, weather, or road conditions. It also found that blue, green, and gray cars likewise had an increased risk, though the correlation was not as strong.
Acknowledging this inconsistency, scientists at the University of Dayton examined crash records in Ohio to try to determine whether they could identify a relationship between car color and crash risk.
This study didn’t reconcile the prior research. Instead, it reached a different conclusion altogether, suggesting that car color doesn’t increase crash risk under all circumstances. The researchers’ analysis showed that no car color is always “more dangerous,” regardless of the lighting, weather, or roads.
When Might Car Color Play a Role in Car Accidents?
The University of Dayton study has one important caveat: Car color can play a role in some car accident scenarios. For example, a black car driving without headlights on an unlit road at night will be more difficult to see than a white car in the same situation. However, on a sunny day, the white car is more likely to cause a blinding glare than the black car.
Ultimately, however, if inattentive or distracted driving causes a driver to fail to notice your car, they likely bear liability irrespective of the color of your vehicle. If you have questions or need help with a claim, reach out to our car accident lawyer for a free case review.
